Canon point: Post Kira case

Personality: To those who meet Near, he can appear to be rather emotionless. He doesn't seem to really connect with other people and has above average intelligence. In fact, he is a genius in his canon and described as having the highest intellect of all the characters by the creator of the series. He is very observant about the things around him, analyzing them and remember the details for all events he witnesses. Along with this he is also a multi-tasker who can perform several activities at once to perfection without losing track of what is happening with another task.

To go with this, he has a very childish nature, often seen playing with toys. His favorite toys are dice which he stacks into towers or robots that he flies through the air. However, he doesn't limit himself to these and as long as the toys aren't some kind of board game or electronic (not including toys that make noises like sound effects) then he will play with it. This isn't the only limit he has though and he will turn other objects into toys to play with when he is without. He is creative and able to create new toys like finger puppets when he so desires to.

Despite being so intelligent and childish though, he really has no social or life skills. This is not to say he can't communicate with other people, of course. Actually, Near is perfectly capable of holding a conversation if he so desires it even if he will avoid things like small talk since he views that as unnecessary. With that said, he really does seem to need someone to be there to care for his needs. If left to his own devices it's likely that he would forget to take care of himself or do something as simple as eat. It's very clear that his intellectual level rises when he's around people and that he needs people to be there to take care of him. True he can be alone for a long period of time but he is very codependent on others. In the end, he does need people around him even if his social skills are extremely lacking.

Now, it's already been stated that Near comes across as emotionless. It should be noted now that this is far from the truth. He feels things deeply but isn't nearly as open about expressing this to the outside world. For that reason, he can come across as robotic and cold. When it comes to things analytical, he can make himself this way but he still can't fully separate himself from the other part of his brain. For example, he feels great respect for L but doesn't like him because he views him as a loser. Also, he was saddened when members of the SPK were being killed off around him and even eats chocolate in honor of Mello who died and who Near liked a great deal. People need to pay attention to the little things to fully grasp how he actually feels about a situation.

Now this isn't to say that he can't do what is necessary in order to achieve a goal. In fact, his methods can be described as barely being within the law and he understands that some sacrifices are required in order to gain a victory. It's true that he doesn't enjoy these sacrifices and that he mourns the loss of them but there is only so much that he can do about that when it comes time for them to happen. This can make him appear cruel and heartless yet Near understands that this is just an emotional response from others to what he has already deemed a necessary course of action.

After all, he does not like to lose. If he is going to go into something then he fully intends to come out as the victor. This means that he will use whatever means necessary to do this so that he doesn't become a loser. In his eyes, losers are trash and should be tossed out since they are now worthless. The very last thing he wants to be is that. It should be noted here that he can still respect someone even if they fall into this status. L is one such person that this applies to. The man was a great and a genius to Near. However, L allowed himself to be taken down by Light and therefore lost to him. People that can likely escape this are those that he happens to be fond of. A great example is that of Mello who appears to have the status of an unfortunate victim in the Kira case rather than someone Kira defeated.

Let it never be forgotten that Near is a genius in terms of intelligence. Typically he can be numerous steps ahead of you with an idea of how you will catch up to him already. Not only that but he knows that he's smarter than you and it can lead to him being rather cheeky about it. Of course, he can be the same in other situations as well but it does seem to come out the most when he's trying to outsmart another person...and succeeding. He is never one who should be underestimated since he is able to understand other people and how their emotions work in a way that best allows him to manipulate them to his advantage. He is confident in what he can do for a very good reason and it's something that should never be forgotten. It's not likely that he will ever forget or miss a detail, you know.

Powers/Abilities: Aside from above average intelligence and observational skills, Near is a very capable leader for an investigation. However, he is a normal human being without any special abilities outside of that and is also rather incapable of taking care of himself. But he can solve complex puzzles as well as build giant card and dice towers.

Prose sample:

The Kira case. It had been something that had been watched and recognized internationally with a fall-out that still stretched across the world. At first people had been surprised by this but they'd settled in quickly enough to accepting that things were just like this. People would still believe that a mad man had been their savior because he'd been willing to do what they hadn't been. Then again, perhaps it was because of madness that he had been so willing. Couple that with an intelligence level of genius proportions...

However, Kira was dead. Near had been witness to that so it was hardly his concern if the people felt they should believe otherwise. Some would believe that a man could be a god, that was where cults came from, how they were born. This was a fact he's studied when he's been in school at Wammy's. It had been a course which he'd taken with several other students, Mello being one of them.

Nibbling on some chocolate, he pondered the other for a moment. He'd been gifted with such potential and a passion to use it. In all honesty, he'd admired that fire the other had had since it really wasn't something he could have himself. Oh he could be passionate about things that were interesting but not the way Mello could. It was true that he would always be the one to be the most intelligent but Mello had been born with a gift that Near doubted the other had ever recognized. It was unfortunate too because now the other would never see it due to his untimely death.

He chewed on the chocolate a moment more. Mello and Matt. They had both been people he'd liked at Wammy's but now both were dead. It was true that death came to all but even he could recognize that it likely hadn't been their time yet. If they'd just followed another path... No, it was too late to dwell on that now since that part had already played out. All he could do now was honor them after death. They deserved that kind of respect.

Yes, in the end, he was the only one left. Some would likely view that as tragic but he'd really always been alone in a way. Having people not understand him was simply how it went. If that was the way the rest of his life was meant to go then so be it. He could live with that. Swallowing the chocolate, he sat up and looked down at the puzzle he'd been working on.

It was completely blank, no color to be found on it. Others would likely find this daunting but he thought nothing of it as he simply added another piece to it. All around him were completed puzzles that he'd finished earlier but had set aside now that they were finished. Eventually someone would come and clean them up since they were no longer of interest to him. He had other things to do, other things to think about. He was the new L now.

L. It was a powerful title to have. Being L meant that you were the best detective in the world, likely the most intelligent man in the world. It meant you were a legend and a mystery. It meant your real identity would always be something besides your real one. The last person to truly carry the title had been killed off and Near still felt him to be a loser because of it. However, he had respected L for what he'd been like as an investigator. After all, he'd taken down a number of powerful criminals before his demise.

Now it was his turn to fill that role. It was like L hadn't ever been killed off by Kira who was now dead himself. Both had just been men in the end, swallowed up by the power death held over the world. Consumed and gone. Losers. Both of them. Near decided not to dwell on them anymore and set the final piece of his puzzle into place. One chapter of his life complete and now it was time for him to start the next. That was the way it was meant to be.

However, something caught his attention. A sudden tugging that he didn't recognize and couldn't...

Near's dark eyes fluttered open and he came to realize he was on a bed in a hotel room. Strange that he would find himself alone without signs of having been drugged or captivity. Sitting up, he looked around and tilted his head to the side. A great power possibly? It did seem likely at this point since it was highly unlikely someone had penetrated his security in order to capture him. Grabbing a strand of his hair, he twirled it a bit while he ran through the various possibilities before his eyes settled on a package. Well now, that was something new and worth noting.

Though he typically wasn't one for walking, he still got up off the bed and grabbed the package to move it down to the floor. The supplies within were rather easy to understand. It was a care package of sorts with things people would need, including a room key and a phone. The phone really was quite simplistic but it would do so he was hardly bothered by the fact. Slipping the smaller things into the pocket of his pajama shirt, he lifted the letter up to read through it, logging away information as he did.

Location: Post-Apocalyptic Las Vegas
Person Responsible: The God of Mischief...Loki
Gender of Population: Male
Currency: Poker Chips
Personal Items: Confiscated
Other Things to Note:
1. Sex was a requirement every two weeks minimum
2. Failing to follow this would result in punishment
3. Two weeks was the grace period before one was kicked out of the hotel room
4. One was required to make their own money
5. Achievements would provide a way to earn money
6. Anri would be able to provide necessities

Setting the letter aside, Near lifted up the brochure next to look through it. For a kidnapping there was a lot of information provided. He found his mind racing as his interest grew and a little smile curled his lips. Already he wanted to learn more about this place and he started to learn more about the areas of interest this place had. It was a pity that his team wasn't here though. Honestly, he wasn't sure what he would do about food and such but he supposed he could hire someone hear for that. It likely wouldn't be too difficult to manage that.

Finishing up with the brochure, he closed it and set it with the rest of the things before turning towards the door. Again, he wished he had someone around but he would have to find a way to make do on his own. At least until he figure things out. Where was he going to store his chips though? Would he have to leave the room to get food? Suddenly there were a lot of things bogging down his mind and by the time he finally made it down to the lobby he was no longer interested in going further. He didn't know how to do all those things necessary to taking care of himself. He'd always had people for that.

Letting out a sigh, Near played with his hair as he sat off out of the way so he could watch things without being seen easily. This really was unfortunate. Perhaps he should return to his room instead. Pity that would take so much effort. Besides, he didn't have any toys in there.

How boring.

And that left him sitting there doing nothing but twirling some hair around his finger while he pondered how to go about this situation. Of course, he never actually considered doing any of the options himself, finding he had no real drive for that. Things that dull...why would anyone do them? He supposed he could try them later but he was wondering if he would bother then either.

Probably not.
